June 2010

Cornwall Environmental Consultants (CEC) Ltd, the trading arm of Cornwall Wildlife Trust, recently delivered ‘continuing professional development’ seminars to architects, developers and tree surgeons looking at ecology, development, bats and trees.

The ‘Ecology and Development’ seminar held at Carnon Downs village hall, provided advice, guidance and information about impacts on the environment and the ecological surveys of habitats and protected species which should be undertaken to minimise disturbance to wildlife.

These surveys ensure that wildlife in Cornwall is protected and where possible enhanced,

allowing the client to stay within the law.  Over 40 people attended the event.

In another seminar, ‘Bats and Trees’, at The Old Shire Inn near Camborne, jointly organised with the Arboricultural Association, 12 of Cornwall’s tree surgeons received guidance about bats roosting in trees.

Steve Marshall, CEC’s Lead Bat Ecologist, said

‘The seminar was enhanced by a visit to Pendarves Woods, a Cornwall Wildlife Trust nature reserve, as this wood has a lot of good examples of bat roost sites within trees. This enabled the tree surgeons to physically see what they should be aware of when felling and lopping trees and what action they should take if they find a bat roost’

If you need a bat survey, or help or advice regarding bats please call CEC on 01872 245510.
